New York State Census Substitutes

Bill Dollarhide’s New York State Censuses & Substitutes belongs on the reference shelf of every individual and institution concerned about the Empire State. Why? Three reasons: (1) Census records and name lists for New York are found mostly at the county level, (2) New York State Censuses & Substitutes shows precisely which census records or census substitutes exist for each of the state’s sixty-two counties and where they can be found, and (3) It ALSO references otherwise obscure census substitutes and name lists for time periods in which the state did not take an official census.

Imagine for a moment that your ancestor lived in Cattaraugus County, in Western New York and you want a comprehensive listing of the censuses and substitutes that are available. The following information is a verbatim printout of p. 27 of New York State Censuses & Substitutes, giving a town-by-town breakdown of censuses and their equivalents for part of the information available in the volume on Cattaraugus County. Although space prohibits us from printing the balance of the Cattaraugus County entries, the following should give New York researchers a good idea of the scope of the book’s coverage.
