Pioneer Families of Northwestern New Jersey originally appeared as a series of weekly articles in the Hackettstown Gazette beginning with the issue of February 16, 1934, and ran for ninety-four installments. The articles were edited by William C. Armstrong of Blairstown and written by Mr. Blair, William H. Vail, William Penn Vail, William M. Kern, and others. The vast majority of the articles trace the genealogy of the featured New Jerseyan, although a few deal with local history and biography, such as the installments on the abolitionist Benjamin Lundy, one of Mr. Armstrong’s heroes. Never widely available, the series nonetheless constitutes the single greatest stockpile of genealogical reference material available on northwestern New Jersey families. This fact was not lost on Mr. Thomas Wilson, publisher of Hunterdon House, who published all ninety-four installments of Armstrong’s Pioneers in book form in 1979, adding a complete name index to the more than 7,000 persons in the process. Clearfield Company is delighted to reprint the Hunterdon version in a limited edition paperback, and we encourage researchers to purchase it if their New Jersey ancestor(s) is listed below: Nicholas Albertson, George Armstrong, Nathan Armstrong, John Axford, John Ayres, John Beamer, John Insley Blair, John Bowman, Jacob Brands, Andrew Bray, John Budd, Roderick Byington, John Collver, John Colver, Nathaniel Conklin, Elisha Cooke, Joseph Dennis, Sr., Josiah Dyer, Jr., Richard Edsall, John Gibbs, Jabez Gwinnup, Joseph Hankinson, William Hann, Hendrick Hover, Edward Hunt, Christopher Inslee, John Jarrard, Samuel Kennedy, Jr., John Kirkpatrick, Thomas Lake, Sr., Isaac Lanning, Richard Lanning, John Lanterman, John Lemon, Benjamin Luse, David Luse, John McCord, John Moore, Thomas Newman, Amos Ogden, Joseph Ogden, Francis Peppard, Joseph Roy, Casper Shaeffer, Frederick Shaver, Archibald Stinson, Lord Stirling, Joseph Thomas, Abner Thorp, Thomas Vail, John Williams, and Robert Willson.
