Description

The Old Tenth Legion was originally part of the far-flung District of Augusta and embraced the present counties of Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Page. The records in this book, though styled Old Tenth Legion marriages, are predominantly of Rockingham County, and include the area of Page County, erected from Rockingham and Shenandoah in 1831. The marriages derive chiefly from marriage bonds on deposit in the Clerk’s Office in Rockingham County, but a fair number derive from ministers’ returns, and some few are taken from Wayland’s History of Rockingham County. In this compilation the marriages are rendered in one alphabetical sequence by the name of the groom, preceded by the date of the record and followed by the name of the bride and names of sureties and parents, and they identify approximately 2,600 couples. Brides are separately indexed. Of inestimable value to the researcher are the consent notes accompanying the marriage bonds. Information obtained from them–names of witnesses and guardians, dates, variant spellings, and a variety of other matter–is critically applied in textual annotations. This work improves on the standard list of marriage bonds largely because it does utilize the data found in the consent notes.
