Description

This family history traces the origins and descendants of John Granbery (b. 1616) of Devonshire, England, who immigrated in 1644 to the now extinct county of Nansemond in far southeastern Virginia. Originally published in 1964, the work is based upon the files of the immigrant ancestor’s descendant, Julian Hastings Granbery, and prepared for publication and augmented by his daughter, Alice Granbery Walter.

John Granbery, Virginia, will appeal to two groups of researchers. In the first group are students of early Virginia history and genealogy in general and that of Nansemond County in particular. As Earl Gregg Swem, Librarian Emeritus of the College of William and Mary, points out in his Foreword, since the county’s records were destroyed by the British in 1779, Julian Granbery’s findings were made possible only by his extensive research in neighboring Virginia counties and abroad. In the second group is any genealogist having an interest in one or more of the book’s main families, who will profit by examining Granbery and Walter’s extensive compilations and documentation of the following families: Granbery, Hastings, Randolph, Shannonhouse, Mhoon, Cowling, Killebrew, Frierson, and Langley.

This reprint edition of John Granbery, Virginia is faithful to the original 1964 printing in every way except two. We have published the entire contents of the original hardcover edition in paperback. The original edition also came with a number of folded maps and charts. We have reprinted all but one of them at the back of this edition. One oversized folding chart has been omitted for reasons of economy.
