The broader aspects of this work treat such important historical events as early colonization by Dutch, German, and Swiss settlers; German colonies in the Carolinas to the close of the Revolutionary War; and the history of the Lutheran Church in the Carolinas from the close of the Revolution to the year 1850. Within this general framework the author neatly disposes of the entire history of the Germans in the Carolinas, answering the criticism leveled at historians for their neglect of the subject.
