This scarce work treats hundreds of luminaries of Maryland law, politics, commerce, industry, and the professions. Each sketch concerns a Marylander who had either descended from an early settler of the colony or had, by 1919, risen to prominence. In all cases Spencer furnishes birth, marriage and death information on the principal subject of the essay and full-blown genealogies on many of them.
