This work attempts to identify Scots who settled in the Carolinas between 1680 and 1830. The Carolinas
were the most popular destinations for Scots emigrants during the eighteenth century. Highland emigrants,
who were farmers generally, tended to settle along the frontier borders of the Carolinas; whereas people
from the Lowlands were mainly merchants, craftsmen, clerical workers, and shipbuilders. They settled
along the coast in centers such as Charleston. The Carolinas became a location from which Scots migrated
elsewhere in the Americas – mainly westwards after the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Numerous
Scots also fled north to Canada after the Revolution. For this work Mr. Dobson conducted his research
mainly in Scotland and in the United States.

This consolidated edition combines the two volumes of Mr. Dobson’s Directory of Scots in the Carolina, 1680-1830, [GPC, 1986; Clearfield, 2004], with Chapter Four: The Emigrant Trade, from his Scottish Trade with Colonial Charleston, 1683-1783 [Clearfield, 2018]. These elements have now been formed into a single volume with a comprehensive index of names.
