Description
This monumental work indexes New Jersey wills and probate records from 1663 through 1900. It contains more than 185,000 entries, arranged alphabetically under the name of the testator and intestate for each of the twenty-one present-day counties of New Jersey, with the number of the will, the year of probate, and references to papers and records connected therewith. Also included at the back of the third volume are indexes to unrecorded wills and New Jersey prerogative wills. This work supersedes the two volumes printed in Trenton in 1901 under the general title of Index of Wills, Office of Secretary of State, State of New Jersey. All of the wills indexed in our reprint volumes are now in the Bureau of Archives and History in the New Jersey State Library in Trenton, and hence these indexes serve as a valuable guide to further information.
Our publication is a reprint of the very scarce limited edition of 1912-13, as published by the State of New Jersey, and it includes a Foreword by the late Dr. Stryker-Rodda, distinguished genealogist and one-time president of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey.
“This set is a necessity for any library wishing to have a basic tool of genealogical research in New Jersey.”–David C. Munn, Archivist, Archives & History Bureau, New Jersey State Library.–The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, April 1970.
