Description

Dr. Stiles was a devoted antiquarian of Windsor and Wethersfield, Connecticut, two of the original three river towns of the Connecticut Colony. The good doctor compiled a massive two-volume work on each of these towns totalling upwards of 2,000 pages apiece. In the interest of economy, we have opted to reprint the family history volume from each set. This volume, Families of Ancient Windsor is crammed with hundreds upon hundreds of genealogies and sketches of pioneering families, and easily stands as a self-contained unit. Dr. Stiles’ genealogies are enhanced, in scores of cases, by illustrations of prominent family members, and virtually all of the surnames assembled in the book are listed in the index at the back. While space does not allow us to list the more than 9,000 persons referred to in Families of Ancient Windsor, the following partial list focuses on those families whose surnames proliferate in the index at the back of the book–including many from the mid-17th century: Abbe (Abbey), Adams, Allen, Allyn, Anderson, Avery, Bailey, Baker, Bancroft, Barber, Barker, Barnard, Barnes, Bartlett, Bates, Beech, Beebe, Belknap, Benton, Bidwell Birge, Bissell, Bliss, Blodgett, Booth, Bowers, Boynton, Bradley, Bronson, Brown, Buckland, Buell, Burnham, Burr, Burt, Butler, Caldwell, Cahoon (Cohoon), Calkins, Campbell, Carpenter, Case, Chaffee, Chandler, Chapin, Chapman, Clapp, Clark, Cole, Collins, Cook, Cooley, Cooper, Cowles, Crane, Crowe, Davis, Demming, Denslow, Dewey, Dibble, Drake, Eatons, Edwards, Eggleston, Ellsworth, Elmer, Eno, Filley, Fish, Fitch, Foot(e), Foster, Fowler, Fox, French, Fuller, Fyler, Gaylord, Gibbs, Gilbert, Gillespie, Gleason, Goodale, Goodrich, Goodwin, Graham, Grant, Green, Griffin, Griswold, Hale, Hall, Hamilton, Harper, Harris, Haskell, Hawley, Hayden, Hayes, Heath, Higley, Hill, Hills, Hillyer, Holcomb, Holkins, Hoskins, Hotchkiss, House, Howard, Hubbard, Humphrey, Hunt, Hurlburt, Hyde, Johnson, Jones, Judd, Kellogg, King, Latimer, Lathrop, Lawrence, Lee, Lewis, Loomis, Lord, Lyman, McKinney, Manley, Marsh, Marshall, Mather, Metcalf, Miller, Mills, Moore, Morris, Morgan, Morton, Moseley, Munsell, Newberry, Noble, Norton, Olmstead, Osborn, Owen, Palmer, Parker, Parsons, Pasco, Patterson, Pease, Peck, Pelton, Perkins, Phelps, Pierce, Pinney, Pitkin, Porter, Potwine, Pratt, Prior, Reed, Richardson, Roberts, Robinson, Rockwell, Rogers, Root, Rowley, Sadd, Sanders, Sanford, Scott, Sexton, Seymour, Shaw, Sheldon, Shepard, Simmons, Skinner, Smith, Spaulding, Spencer, Stiles, Stoughton, Strong, Talcott, Taylor, Terry, Thompson, Thrall, Treat, Trumbull, Turner, Ward, Warham, Warner, Warren, Watson, Webster, Wells, White, Wilcox, Williams, Wilson, Wolcott, Wood, Woodbridge, Woodruff, Woodward, and Wright.
