Description

In 1752 a hurricane destroyed the courthouse containing the Onslow County records; nonetheless, all records that could be found were restored, and to them were added authorized copies of lost records. The records contained in these volumes, therefore, are abstracts of all existing records of the county from its beginning in 1734 and continuing through 1850. The abstracts consist of wills, deeds, guardian accounts, the 1790 census, marriage records, land entries and grants, and the 1850 census. The earliest wills are housed in the State Archives at Raleigh, NC, as are the earliest deeds and marriage bonds. Each book of deeds is preceded by an index of the contents therein, and each book of wills is alphabetically arranged, as are the marriage records. The later wills, deeds, land records, and guardian bonds are housed in the courthouse of Onslow County at Jacksonville. The wills are alphabetically arranged and each deed book is preceded by its own index. Land records and guardian accounts are also arranged alphabetically.
