Description
This work was originally published as Volume IV of Crozier’s well-known series Virginia County Records. As the title suggests, it is a collection of early Virginia marriages. Most of the records date from the 1700s, although some–the Westmoreland marriages, for instance–run as late as 1824. The 5,000 marriages listed here derive from original bonds and intentions and are arranged in chronological order by county. In general, the records provide the names of the bride and groom, the date of the bond, and, where given, the names of parents and guardians. While the coverage varies from county to county, it is largely complete for the period concerned. The following is a list of the counties whose bonds are abstracted here: Amelia, Augusta, Charles City, Elizabeth City, Fauquier, King George, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Middlesex, Rockbridge, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, Westmoreland, and York.
The reader might note that our reprint contains an index, which was lacking in the original edition.
