Edward and Grace (Norrington) Burling emigrated from Barking, Essex, England, to New York City in about 1680. Three generations of English ancestors plus thirteen generations of descendants (to the present) are presented in the book, which is fully documented and contains a 164-page index. Significant Quaker history impacts the early generations in England and America. The Burlings were wheelwrights, joiners, boat builders and merchants. They spread to Long Island, Westchester County, and upstate New York. Later migrating across America, their stories are "grist for the mill of the social historian." (Foreword by Harry Macy F.A.S.G.)
